5th Grade Science Skills
-Genetics, Body Systems & Cells
This unit teaches students about plant and animal cells, their structures and functions. This leads us into a study of the various systems of our bodies and the specialized cells, pieces, and parts that operate within them. Finally, we put all of this together to study how traits are passed from one generation to the next through genetics.
-Matter & Energy
This science focuses on heat energy and transfer from one object to another, as well as within the water cycle. Students make connections to the volume of objects within this unit as well, while studying the sum of all parts.
-Forces & Motion
A study of Newton's Laws of Motion encompasses this unit that is incredibly hands on. Here, students will learn about force, mass, gravity, inertia, and more!
-Ecosystems
Building upon the existing knowledge of students, this unit zooms in on various biomes, food chains/webs, and interdependent relationships between animals and humans.
-Weather
In this unit, students learn all about clouds, weather patterns and systems, and the way weather travels around the earth. Students learn to predict weather happenings based on daily weather conditions, and what they have learned about how weather can change.
